Today, Zhang Wei, a student from Anhui province of the liberal arts and sciences department of Shanghai Second Polytechnic University, donated hematopoietic stem cells in Shanghai First People's Hospital to rescue a leukemia patient, sending hope for life to a leukemia patient. At the same time, Zhang Wei became the 435th hematopoietic stem cell donor in Shanghai and the 12th in Shanghai Second Polytechnic University.

Zhang Wei is a senior student majoring in Applied Statistics at Shanghai Second Polytechnic University and has participated in voluntary blood donation twice in school. She joined the Chinese hematopoietic stem cell donor database in 2016 as a volunteer donor. Earlier this year, Zhang Wei received a call from the Shanghai Red Cross society telling her that she had successfully matched a patient's blood type. She considered for a while and answered “I’d like to do that.” At first, Zhang’s mom worried that the donation would do harm to the health of Zhang. However, after consulting relevant information Zhang herself and telling her mother the process and related knowledge of donating hematopoietic stem cells, worry of Zhang’s family members was eliminated.

After donating hematopoietic stem cells, the donor often needs a period of time for recuperation, while the time of Zhang’s recuperation was the golden period of enterprises’ recruitment. When asked whether she was worried about missing perfect employment opportunities because of the donation, Zhang answered: “I have thought about the consequences thoroughly before applying to join the volunteer. Once I have promised, I will not regret.”

On December 27, 2003, Shanghai Second Polytechnic University set a "Shanghai Second Polytechnic University Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donation volunteer Organization " among young students, helping students to know more about the Chinese hematopoietic stem cell donor database and the related knowledge of it by inviting professionals to deliver lectures, distributing brochures, going to students’ dormitories to publicize related knowledge, and advising volunteers of successful hematopoietic stem cell donating. So far, nearly 5000 students and teachers have joined the database of Chinese hematopoietic stem cell donors.

Over the past 16 years, there have been 12 volunteers successfully donated hematopoietic stem cells in Shanghai Second Polytechnic University (SSPU), and SSPU has become the leader in the donation of hematopoietic stem cell in Shanghai. As to the hemopoietic stem cell donors, they were all awarded with the President Award symbolizing the highest honor on campus.
